Mary Washington House

George Washington may be known as the father of our country, but just like everyone else, he loved his mother. In fact, in 1722, George Washington bought the house at 1200 Charles Street for his mother, and the dwelling is still standing to this day. The Mary Washington House is about 10 minutes from the Fredericksburg Hospitality House, so you should have no trouble finding time for a visit during your stay. Washington’s mother, Mary, lived in the frame house for the last 17 years of her life. The last time George saw his dear mother, it was in this house just before he became President of the United States. The house contains period furnishings including some of Mary’s actual possessions including her favorite teapot. The Garden Club of Virginia has even reconstructed Mary’s famous garden, a job that was completed in 1969. Mary Washington is the mother of one of the most famous Americans ever, and a tour of her house provides visitors with some insight into the personal life of this Founding Father.
